Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens

Summary

Icon Key: Free Shipping Smart Buy Trusted Store
Summary: Canon EF Mount, Zoom Lens, for 35 mm SLR, Focus: Autofocus, Max Aperture: f/4, 12 Elements in 9 Groups, Filter size: 77 mm, Weight...
Overall Rating: 5 / 5

The EF17-40mm f/4L USM is an ultra wide angle Canon EF zoom lens meant for professional and high amateur SLR EOS camera users. While it is an excellent lens when used with an analogue SLR camera, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is especially well suited for digital SLR cameras with an imaging sensor size smaller than the 35mm format. Indeed on such digital SLR cameras these focal lengths can give an angle of view approximately equivalent to that of a 28-70mm lens used on a 35mm camera, which makes it the ideal standard zoom lens. The EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements arranged in 9 groups. Super Spectra Coating on the elements ensures excellent color balance and minimizes ghosting and flare. To provide superb image quality over a 17-40mm zoom range the lens uses three aspheric elements of two different types, while Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass is used to prevent the chromatic aberrations that often can degrade the subject edge clarity.Minimum focusing distance is just 28mm throughout the entire zo...

Yes....I finally got my wide angle - by jedi29
Overall Rating:
5 / 5

Pros: Sharp, well made, important focal length on smaller sensor Canon dSLR
Cons: Price, bulky hood, 1.6 crop factor robs its ultra wide magic
Reviews By
Bottom Line: If you love wide angle and high image quality than definitely give this lens a serious consideration.
Review: This is one of Canon's entry-level professional grades L series lens. The word entry level is usually associated with something affordable. Well in the Canon SLR world an affordable "L" means 700 bucks. A lot of cash for an enthusiastic hobbyist and I... (more)
the cheaper (not lesser) canon wide angle zoom - by wilco42
Overall Rating:
5 / 5

Pros: excellent image quality, solid construction, constant maximum aperture through zoom range
Cons: the 17-40mm f/4L may be a little too slow for some
Reviews By
Bottom Line: I recommend this lens to anyone who is on a budget, but needs the wide angle zoom.
Review: Anyone looking for a wide angle zoom for their Canon body only has a few choices available to them. There is the cheap (EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 for ~$350), the not so cheap (EF 17-40mm f/4L for ~$700) and the uber expensive (EF 16-35mm f/2.8 for ~$1400)... (more)
A "must have" for lovers of (Canon) wide-angle lenses! - by fashfoto
Overall Rating:
5 / 5

Pros: An ultra wide-angle zoom lens, well constructed, reasonably priced, yielding great image quality…
Cons: Well, $700 is $700, reasonable or not!
Reviews By
Bottom Line: This is a great lens to add to anyone's basic array of Canon lenses. Smooth operation, great images…
Review: Back in the sixties (well before many of you may have been born), a number of top photographers like Horn and Griner (Steve Horn, Norm Griner), Bert Stern, Francesco Scavullo, Melvin Sokolsky, and Otto Storch were shooting fashion and illustration photos... (more)
A last minute addition that has proven to be a great asset - by ncphototrekker
Overall Rating:
5 / 5

Pros: Typical Canon "L" build quality...excellent. Silent AF, constant aperture, internal focusing.
Cons: The only negative is there is no hyperfocal scale.
Reviews By
Bottom Line: For the landscape photographer on a budget, this is a must have lens to start your quality lens collection. There is plenty of focal range for flexibility.
Review: I’ll be honest here…this was not a lens that I had intentionally wanted to purchase. When I was selecting my lenses for a new Canon outfit, I had the ranges from 10-22mm and 24-70mm covered. I wasn’t all that concerned with the gap between the two... (more)
My Favorite Landscape Lens - by andgott
Overall Rating:
5 / 5

Pros: Sharp optics. Great build quality. Good range.
Cons: Heavy. Expensive. Massive hood. No Image Stabilizer
Reviews By
Bottom Line: A great landscape lens, and a great buy for "l" series Glass!
Review: I was in need of a lens to replace the 'Kit' lens that came with my Rebel XT, and found this lens was the one that fit the bill. I used it, and compared it in the field, to other canon lenses, and decided that this particular lens was what I needed... (more)
One 'L' of a lens that will not let you down! - by hopetest
Overall Rating:
5 / 5

Pros: Super sharp, beautiful to use, top quality, weather sealed
Cons: Need a bigger back for the lenshood! Nothing else, this is a GREAT lens!
Reviews By
Bottom Line: I love this lens, it is a top quality lens giving top quality results at a price reasonable for what you are buying. What more can I ask for really?
Review: I recently upgraded my digital camera to the Canon 20D and decided I could not insult it by plonking my Sigma 18-50mm DG lens on the front. Very little point in having an 8.2MP sensor and shoving cheap grade glass in front that doesn't have the resolving... (more)
Good value but I would invest in the 16-35mm f/2.8 - by motomille
Overall Rating:
4 / 5

Pros: Image Quality, Great Value for L series, Not too heavy
Cons: Not a f/2.8
Reviews By
Bottom Line: Great lens, but buy the 16-35mm f/2.8 for more flexibility - you'll thank me for it later.
Review: Now hear me out. I know this lens runs around $600 and the 16-35mm f/2.8 is twice that for $1200. First off... if you're shooting with something like a 20D and it's not full frame (1.6x) you're getting a 27-64mm. So going down to 16 for that wide... (more)
Get the big picture. - by poprockruss
Overall Rating:
5 / 5

Pros: Sharp images. Contrast & color. Solid construction. A handsome piece of equipment. Pride of ownership.
Cons: None. Some may say it's too pricey. It's not.
Reviews By
Review: This is the first prime lens I have owned. Although I have taken only one roll of shots with it, I am very happy with it so far. It is lighter than I thought it would be. It balances well on my Canon ELAN 7. The construction appears to be top notch... (more)
Great build quality with sharp results - by tt81156
Overall Rating:
4 / 5

Pros: Great build quality and sharp results
Cons: Sometimes hunts in low-light
Reviews By
Review: This lens has typical L class build quality - weather sealed and a solid feel. This lens is sharp and can produce excellent wide views on a full-frame camera. The only gripe I have with this lens is it sometimes hunts for focus in low-light... (more)

-color and sharpness
Cons: -weight
Reviews By
Review: I tried a 28-70 on my 10D but always ended up frustrated because it was too tight, especially when shooting indoors and in crowds. After a lot of reading and debating I found a used 17-40 for $600 and jumped on it. What a great lens! The first big... (more)
Perfect for Indoors and Scenery - by camerawizard
Overall Rating:
5 / 5

Pros: Solid, sharp, bombproof. Buy it.
Cons: On the heavy side due to solid metal build.
Reviews By
Review: I use this lens on a Rebel XT. This lens is a very, very well built, and solid product. I am very happy with it and recommend it highly. I compared the EF-S zooms with IS and for the same money I have this L series lens with a MUCH nicer build quality... (more)
